Kyllyan
Hejven.se managed to sneak past security at Autechre, an event that offered the very best of electronic.
Here, we were fortunate enough to meet the very lovely and experienced Tine, who was kind enough to provide us with her Top 10 in electronic music.
1. LFO:
“Advance” from 1996. ‘Psychodelic’ in particular, stands out as a true classic.
LFO originally consisted of Mark Bell along with Gez Varley. (who later produced Bjork og Depeche Modes’ ”Exciter”. On this album, the sound of Mark Bell clearly stands out) The latter also produced a solo-album, although that was a bit too techno for me. If you’re hungry for mere, I recommend this interview with Mark Bell
2. Massive Attack:
Perhaps you’ll remember Karmacoma from 2005 (in which Tricky makes an apperance. He is usually rapping and smoking a few joints, when he’s not working with Bjork and Portishead that is) or Teardrop. Great tracks. You’ll find “Teardrop” from 2005 here , however, back then Massive Attack had already gone commercial.
The “Blue lines”-album from 1991, however, defines them better: watch “Unfinished Sympathy” here. Furthermore, Liz Fraser sings on Teardrop, – Liz Fraser aka Cocteau Twins.
3. Orbital:
I’m only linking their all-time best track: Otoño (Autumn). “I want to be a leaf spiralling, and after that, I want nothing at all”. Poetry at its best.
4. The Orb:
“Little Fluffy Clouds” is the all-time classic from 1990, and can be heard here.
The man behind The Orb was William Orbital, who later produced Madonna’s album ”Ray of Light”. However, my personal Orb-favourite is “Loving you” a.k.a. “A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld” from 1989. Hell, even *I* was green back then. I cried tears of joy when Kjeld Tolstrup played it at ‘Paradis’. Seriously ! It can be found here.
5. Tricky:
From the album ”Maxinquaye” 1995: Overcome. I also have a thing for Black Steel – which can be viewed here.
6 and 7. Non Place Urban Field and Burnt Friedmann:
Listen to Western Dub fra 1995. Non Place Urban Field is by the way a.k.a. Burnt Friedmann.
You need to listen to everything this guy has made; a pure genius.
Sadly, I could only find this on YouTube: It Hurts! (from the album “Plays Love Songs” from 2001). The entire album must be heard in one session, since the tracks are connected and thus telling a story.
8. Mouse on Mars:
One favourite (although they’re all great) is Kompod from the album Niun Niggung – I saw those guys live in Bologna, Italy. Awesome. Electronic music that makes you laugh by using wacky samples and fart noises.
9. Goldie:
Oooh, there’s no way we’re avoiding this guy. Top jungle/drum’n'bass-maker and ugly as fuck.
First, take the classic Innercity Life from 1995 here. Or, take Temper Temper although this isn’t exactly an “oldie”.
Then, whenever you think you’re ready, take his 45-minute track “Mother” from Saturn Returnz. I haven’t been able to find it anywhere, but I cried the first time I heard it simply because it was so beautiful; it made a profound impression on me.
10. Chemical Brothers:
You probably know these guys, but they had their breakthrough in 1995 with Leave Home and Chemical Beats that was part of the soundtrack from the videogame ‘Wipeout‘; coolest game EVAH! I didn’t play it though, I just stared at it for hours while being in love with the graphics. Therefore, the Wipeout soundtrack is also something you should definitely listen to.
(10. Again, but this guy has to be mentioned)
10. (11?) Fluke:
Listen to Atom Bomb from the album Risotto. For a long time, I thought that track was about me.
There’s also Leftfield, Future Sound of London, Dreadzone, A Guy called Gerald (1988!), Alex Reece, Dave Clark, Boom Boom Satellites (Japanese punk-break-fusion-jungle-act), Biosphere, Plaid og 808 State. And Roni Size and Aphex Twin… and Underworld.
My beloved Underworld, but I hope you know those. Otherwise, you’ll have your ass kicked!

You said “The man behind The Orb was William Orbital, who later produced Madonna’s album ”Ray of Light”.”
This is inscrutable joke. Yes? If not, epic fail.

@ctel:
Hi,
no, actually it is an honest mistake. I wrote the Top 10 late at night so it slipped my radar. Thanks for mentioning it =). And my excuses to William Orbit.
