Pick Up The Phone
Okay, normally I’m not at huge fan of posting multiple remixes of the same song. But once in a while you bump in to a track with so many great mixes that you just got to have them all.
I feel that way with “Pick Up the Phone”.
The track is from Dragonette, an Canadian electropop quartet. Martina Sorbara is the lead singer and she has quite a characteristic and sweet voice. The three others in the band are Dan Kurtz, Chris Hugget and Joel Stouffer.
Sorbara and Kurtz met at a Canadian folk music festival and they formed a duo named The Fuzz. Later they married and because Kurtz also played bass in The New Deal the two newly wed decided to go full-time on their new project and move to London for a while with a new record deal in their hands.
Before moving to UK they picked up the rest of the quartet and renamed to the now-know-name Dragonette.
In London they recorded their first real album after the self-entitled EP from 2005. The debut album was called “Galore” and saw the bright light of London in 2007. While in London they supported big names like Basement Jaxx and Sugarbabes and opened for New order and Duran Duran. Later Kurtz said the the opening gig for New Order “was a fucking disaster” because “we were not meant for their crowd”.
None of the tracks from Galore ranked very high on any hit list what so ever, but when doing a cover of Calvin Harris’ “The Girls” (renaming the song to “The Boys”) Dragonette received some airplay and after releasing a new track “I Get Around” the band peaked at #66 on the Billboard’s Canadian Hot 100.
In 2008 Martina and Dan helped Cyndi Lauper, writing and producing “Grab a Hold” from her 2008 album “Bring Ya to the Brink”. That same year they received a Juno Award nomination for Best New Group. In 2009 their new album “Fixin to Thrill” was released and this time Dragonettes had a bit of luck going their way.
“Pick Up The Phone” reached #43 at the Canadian charts and they been able to create a bit of fuzz about themselves.
Via.
In lack of better words the Dragonette do electropop heavily inspired by the 80′s icons like Depeche Mode and Eurythmics. The new wave synthpop was so the 80′s got a huge comeback and seems to be the new black. The genre definitely seems to be having it’s impact on hit music this year!
Anyway here I bring you four different remixes of “Pick Up The Phone”.
